The Airport Operator Stock Index as of 21 August 2020

Created by Airport Insights, the Airport Operator Stock Index is a customized market capitalization-weighted stock market index that tracks the performance of 25 airport operators listed in stock exchanges all over the world.

It tracks the total market capitalization of this group of airport operators on a weekly basis, with the 31 July 2020 being the base date and the index having containing a value of 100 derived from the weighted average market capitalization as of the base date.

Over the past week, the Index moved down by 0.4 points to reach 107.5 points at the close of 21 August 2020. Compared to the start of the Index on 31 July 2020, the Index has increased by 7.5 points.

The poorer performance of the Airport Operator Stock Index over the week has largely been driven by the negative performance of a couple of airport operator stocks as shown in the tables below.

Over the week, the majority of airport operators saw declines in their share prices and market capitalization. The best performing airport operators were Sydney Airport Corporation Limited (SYD.AX), which saw a 4.6% growth in market capitalization over the past week as well as Auckland International Airport Limited (AIA.NZ) which grew by 5.7% in market capitalization over the past week.

Analyzing the growth in market capitalization from the start of the Airport Operator Stock Index on 31 July 2020, Japan Airport Terminal Company's stock showed the highest growth in its market capitalization.

Highlights of the week ending on 21 Aug 2020:

Aena announced the launch of the Aena Ventures programme, a global programme which will provide funding for start-ups looking to use technology to improve the passenger experience at airports.

Aéroports de Paris SA announced its July 2020 traffic figures.In July 2020, Groupe ADP total traffic was down by 77.3% compared to July 2019, with 6 million passengers welcomed for the entire network of operated airports.Passenger traffic at TAV Airports, 46.1%-owned by Groupe ADP, decreased by 82.8% in July 2020 and has decreased by 79.6% since the beginning of the year.

The Vietnam Aviation Business Association (VABA) has proposed the Government lend domestic airlines a credit package of between 25-27 trillion VND (1.08-1.17 billion USD) at a preferential interest rate for a three-four year term. It also it asked the Government to direct the Ministry of Transport and the Airport Corporation of Vietnam to cut 50 percent of all airport service charges.

The Ministry of Transport of Thaland is pushing for Airports of Thailand to add four more local airports to its management portfolio by the end of this year.

Auckland International Airport Ltd announced that it had scrapped its final dividend and posted a 31.4% decline in full-year profit, as coronavirus-related restrictions led to fewer flights.

SITA announced that it had outfitted Beijing Capital International Airport with its flagship Smart Path biometric screening system. The contactless solution will cover the entire passenger journey, allowing people to move through security checkpoints and board their planes with a simple facial recognition scan.

Corporación América announced its results for Q2 2020.

It suffered a year-on-year decline in passenger traffic by 97.8% to 0.4 mil.

Excluding the impact of IFRS rule IAS 29, its revenues declined 78.9%, or US$312.0 mil, to US$83.5 mil, mainly due to a US$170.5 mil drop in Aeronautical revenues driven by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and lower construction service revenue in Argentina reflecting lower capex in the period.

The company announced an operating loss of US$76.1 mil compared to an operating profit of US$76.5 million in Q2 2019.

Flughafen Wien Group reported that for the first half of 2020, number of passengers handled fell by 66.0% year-on-year to a total of 6.2 mil.

Revenue of the Flughafen Wien Group in the period fell by 51.2% to EUR 195.8 mil (US$230.0 mil).

EBITDA declined by 73.3% to EUR 48.9 mil (US$57.7 mil) , and EBIT was down by 113.8% to minus EUR 16.2 mil (US$ 19.1 mil).

Fraport reported in July 2020, Frankfurt Airport served a total of 1,318,502 passengers, representing an 80.9% decline year-on-year.

Hainan Meilan International Airport Company Limited announced its results for H1 2020.

The company recorded a passenger throughput of 6.0 mil passengers in H1 2020, 51.6% lower than that in H1 2019.

Total revenue for H1 2020 was RMB 608.5 mil (US$87.94 mil) , 25.8% lower than that in H1 2019. Net profit attributable to shareholders was RMB 79.61 (US$11.51 mil) , 71.1% lower than that in H1 2019.
